i selected traffic and then i selected a location, but i see nothing on the map. does that mean there is no traffic in the area around me?

It means that there is no reported traffic around you.  Real time traffic data is typically available for major arteries such as freeways, highways, and other major roads.  You may need to pan around or zoom out to see the traffic conditions on the major arteries and roads that may impact your trip.
