can i alter how soon the next turn is shown?

Yes.  From the main Cricket Navigator screen, select Menu (Left Soft Key), and then Preferences.  Select Navigation Preferences, then Show Next Turn.  Use the Track Ball to select whether to always show the next turn or only show it when it’s nearby.  When done, press OK to save the setting.
