Long-Time Nurse and Community Volunteer Partners with Cricket to Raise Funds for Arizona Hemophilia Association
TUCSON – November 5, 2008 – Long-time Arizona Hemophilia Association volunteer, Socorro Orozco, has partnered with Cricket Communications, Inc., a leading provider of unlimited wireless services, to help raise funds for the Arizona Hemophilia Association. Orozco will make Cricket’s official green salsa entry in the second annual My Nana’s Salsa Challenge.
Orozco has worked as a medical assistant for 9 years at the University Medical Center Pediatric Hematology Clinic and has served as a volunteer with the Arizona Hemophilia Association during this time. “I really like volunteering to help the families of hemophilia patients. I’ve known their kids since they were little and they are like family to me,” said Orozco.
My Nana’s Salsa Challenge is a fundraiser to benefit the Arizona Hemophilia Association and takes place on Saturday, November 8, at Reid Park Outdoor Performance Center (900 S. Randolph Way) from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. The event features restaurants, businesses and individuals competing to make the best salsa in their category. Over 30 competitors prepare fresh salsa on-site in either the mild or hot category.
Hemophilia is a bleeding disorder that affects over 800 families in Arizona with 200 of these in Southern Arizona. “We are proud to participate in this year’s My Nana’s Salsa Challenge and give back to the Tucson community. Our staff really enjoys participating in the event and we hope everyone comes out to support the Arizona Hemophilia Association,” said Randy McCutchan, district director for Cricket.
The Salsa Challenge is the primary fund-raiser of The Arizona Hemophilia Association. The money raised through corporate sponsorships, ticket sales, food, & beverage sales are used to continue educational and emotional support programs for the hemophilia community at large. A few of the events funded include several educational retreats for families dealing with HIV/AIDS as it relates to hemophilia and CAMP H.O.N.O.R., sending over 120 children with hemophilia and their siblings for a week of summer camp fun and companionship. The Arizona Hemophilia Association’s main goal is to teach children with this disease that they can become active and healthy members of today’s society.
Orozoco made both tomatillo and green chile salsa and had a taste test among friends and family to select the best salsa to enter in the competition. “It looks like the tomatillo salsa will win out this year. I think people will like the mix of tomatillos, cilantro and onions,” said Orozco.
