Martin Bayless, a Dayton native, is an instrumental role model, coach, and leader for the sport of football. He is a former fourth-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1984 draft and a first round pick of the of the USFL’s Memphis Showboats of Bowling Green. He ranks second in NCAA history for career interceptions with 27. During his NFL career, Bayless started 133 games, making 586 tackles, 11.5 sacks, and 12 career interceptions. He has been coaching since retiring as a player in 1998.

Bayless started the Martin Bayless Football Camp in 1986 in Dayton. More than 125,000 youngsters have participated in Bayless’ camps across the country held in five cities, San Diego, Phoenix, Kansas City, Buffalo and Dayton, making it the largest free football camp in the U.S. Past participants include three individuals who have gone on to become Heisman Trophy Winners—Reggie Bush, Ricky Williams and Rashaan Salaam—and two who went on to become the first overall pick in the NFL Draft—Alex Smith and Dan Wilkinson. Bayless’ camps and other charitable projects are under the direction of the Martin Bayless Charitable Foundation, established in 1994.

“Through the sport of football, we try to educate camp participants about teamwork, decision-making, setting goals, trust, tolerance, and other qualities that are necessary for success in sports and in life,” said Bayless.  “Many thanks are due to the Dayton area community for their unwavering support of the Martin Bayless Charitable Foundation and our efforts to create positive experiences for youth.”

Cricket is a proud supporter of the camp and Bayless’ work with children in the community, this year Cricket has donated six wireless phones and service for use during the Dayton camp. “The Cricket phones will definitely make the camp run more smoothly by improving communications between the NFL Players and coaches involved,” said Bayless.

Informational pamphlets about the camp are available at Dayton area Cricket stores, Smokey Bones restaurants, BW3s restaurants and Welcome Stadium.
