Free Gas is Prescription for San Antonio Nurse Who Must Drive to See Patients
SAN ANTONIO (October 16, 2006) – Cricket wireless service is making it easier for two non-profit agencies in San Antonio to make ends meet and for 30 local residents to smile when they fill up their vehicles at the gas pump. Cricket representatives today announced the winners of Cricket’s “Great Gas Giveaway” all of whom will receive free gas for an entire year. The individual winners include Deloris Capps, a hospice nurse who spends hundreds of dollars of her own money on gas each month visiting her terminally ill patients.
“Since Cricket is a fairly new company in the San Antonio market, we want to demonstrate that we are a good corporate citizen that supports the communities we serve,” said Cody Simpson, district director for San Antonio. “With gas prices constantly in flux, we think that one of the most substantial ways that we can help people is to pay their fuel expenses.”
The individuals and non-profit agencies received Valero gas cards that will provide $50 worth of gas every week for a full year. The amount that each of the 32 individuals and organizations will receive over the course of the year is $2,600, which adds up to a collective total of $83,200 in prizes.
Ms. Capps spends many hours on the road every week visiting her patients. She spends as much as $300 on gas each month. She indicated that there have been weeks when she has had to count change on her dresser in order to have enough money to complete her rounds.
The non-profit contest winners include The Boys & Girls Club – Calderon Branch and the Westside YMCA. These organizations were chosen by Cricket based upon their level of dependence on vehicular transportation to carry out their missions.
The “Cricket Great Gas Giveaway” contest took place in July. Over a thousand people registered to
participate during this period by submitting entry forms at Cricket’s four retail store locations, as well as
at Cricket’s premier dealer locations. The individual winners were selected in a random drawing in September.
The announcement of the winners took place at the Valero gas station on 1002 Castroville Road (at S. General McMullen Dr.). City council members Patti Radle and Richard Perez presented the winners with the checks. Valero served as Cricket’s corporate partner in awarding the non-profit component of the giveaway.
