Fourth of July Weekend Means Care Packages for Troops and Free Calls to Iraq at Cricket

ALBUQUERQUE – June 18, 2009 – Cricket Communications, Inc., a leading provider of wireless services, and Rio Grande Valley Blue Star Mothers (RGVBSM), a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping make living conditions for troops overseas better, will begin collect non-perishable food and toiletry items during the Fourth of July weekend for troops serving abroad who are in need of care-packages. Cricket will also offer free calls to Iraq for military families to speak with their loved ones, and the local chapter of the Blue Star Mothers will be present to answer any questions on how to get involved and troop necessities.

The donation drive and free calls will take place at two Cricket store locations, 6209 Menual Blvd. NE and 200 Coors Blvd. NW, on Friday, July 3, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, July 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Items accepted for donation include travel-size toiletries, such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, etc. Non-perishable food items can include, but are not limited to, jerky, tuna in foil pouches, chewing gum, trail mix, pop-tarts, and tea bags. All food items should be individual servings or sample-size.

Jackie Guerry, district director for Cricket, stated, “We are extremely grateful to all the men and women who serve our country overseas. Cricket is proud to support their service and give the community the chance to send them care packages and make free calls to Iraq. This is a strong, supportive community and we know many families will come show their appreciation and donate. We also hope that many families will come to stay connected with loved ones in Iraq.”

“Our chapter supports our sons and daughters who are serving in harm’s way. We want the troops to know that their service is not forgotten by the people of their hometown communities,” said Jan Downs, RGVBSM mom.

The RGVBSM are a group of mothers and step-mothers who have sons or daughters currently serving or are honorably discharged from the Armed Forces of the United States. They are a nationally recognized organization with chapters located across the U.S. They organize care-packages, neck coolers, and welcome homes at the Sunport for all troops. The 2009 goal for the RGVBSM is to send 3,000 care-packages over the course of the year and the donation drive at Cricket locations is a simple way to get the community involved with the donations.
