Cricket Provides Homeless with Free Phone Calls to Family, Friends
NASHVILLE – Dec. 20, 2007 – No matter which holiday traditions you celebrate, spending time with friends and family makes the season memorable. But for many, including the homeless, traveling to visit loved ones, or even calling them, is impossible. That’s why Cricket Communications, a leading provider of unlimited wireless services, offered free phone calls today at the Campus for Human Development, an organization that helps the local homeless community.
“Being able to talk with someone you care about during the holidays, whether on the phone or face-to-face, is a great blessing,” said Bill Boyce, Cricket district director for Middle Tennessee. “It’s very important to Cricket that everyone has this opportunity, especially those who are in a situation that makes it nearly impossible to connect with loved ones.”
Cricket provided free phone calls to individuals at the Campus for Human Development, located at 532 8th Avenue South, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Calls could be made to anywhere in the United States or Mexico for no charge. Cricket has participated in this event for the past six years. As part of this year’s outreach effort to the homeless, Cricket also coordinated the delivery of 200 knit caps donated by Dollar General Corporation, 25 dozen doughnuts donated by Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, and 400 meals from Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits, courtesy of general manager Dearell Homer.
“The staff and volunteers at the Campus for Human Development truly appreciate the fact that Cricket continues to return every year,” said Reverend Charles Strobel, director of the Campus for Human Development. “Even as the need seems to grow along with Nashville, Cricket has come back to us with more co-sponsors and more generous donations.”
“Helping out those who are less fortunate during the holiday season is a Cricket tradition we are all very proud of,” said Boyce. “In the past, this event has made a real difference in the lives of the homeless. Several times, the calls have resulted in a long-awaited reunion, with family members sending a bus ticket so the individual could return home.”
Campus for Human Development is an interdenominational, faith-based organization that serves Nashville’s homeless community with a variety of programs that meet individuals’ needs for food, shelter, education and treatment for alcohol and drug abuse.
