Cricket Hosts Mock Election to Teach Youth About Voting Process

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Oct. 8, 2008 – Cricket Communications Inc, a leading provider of unlimited wireless services, invited visitors viewing a rare, original copy of the Declaration of Independence in the downtown public library this week to experience the voting process first hand by participating in a mock election. 1,930 people cast their ballots on real voting booths provided by the Metro Nashville Election Commission, voting on president, favorite historical character and ice cream flavor.

A broad sample of people cast ballots in the mock election, including all ages – from toddlers to retired Americans – races and education levels. Several school groups and boy and girl scout troops attended the event. Participants were mostly from Middle Tennessee, but a few out-of-state visitors took part.

The results are as follows:
• President of the Unites States
o Sen. Barack Obama: 47.7%
o Sen. John McCain: 45.2%
o Ralph Nader 5%

• Favorite historical character portrayed at the event
o Benjamin Franklin: 31.8%
o Thomas Jefferson: 25.5%

• Favorite ice cream flavor
o Chocolate: 53.2%
o Vanilla: 31.2%
o Strawberry: 15.6%

“We want to thank everyone who took part in this mock election,” said Jane Hutson, Cricket area general manager. “It was a fun way to teach children how to vote and for adults to voice their opinions.”

Cricket is a nationwide partner with Declare Yourself, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to encouraging young people to vote. With the help of its local media partner, WKDF 103 FM, Cricket ran a successful voter registration initiative, which ended on the registration deadline, Oct. 6.
