Cricket Hosts First Annual Cricket Charity Golf Tournament

SAN DIEGO – October 3, 2007 – The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society San Diego Chapter, a nonprofit organization providing support services and financial assistance to patients and families affected by blood cancers, and Cricket Communications, Inc, a leading provider of unlimited wireless services, will host a charity golf tournament on Monday, October 8th to support the Society.  The first annual Cricket Charity Golf Tournament will be held at the exclusive Santaluz Golf Club, located at 8170 Caminito Santaluz East in San Diego.

“We are very excited that Cricket is helping The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society increase awareness of these deadly blood cancers and supporting our mission by holding the Cricket Charity Golf Tournament and taking us one step closer in finding a cure,” said Jenna Korb, Executive Director of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society San Diego Chapter.

The proceeds from the tournament will be directly allocated to San Diego County residents seeking assistance.  More than 75 percent of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s expenditures go directly to advance the Society’s mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

“As a proud member of the San Diego community, Cricket takes sincere pride in supporting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society San Diego Chapter,” said Fernando Corona, regional vice president for Cricket.  “By hosting this golf tournament, we hope to raise funds that will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the lives of patients and families currently seeking treatment for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma in San Diego.”

Cricket’s partnership with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society San Diego Chapter stems from a personal connection Sergio Garcia, the company’s director of device strategy & product management, has with the organization.  Garcia’s wife, Lorena, is a survivor of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.  Through Mrs. Garcia’s battle with the disease, the Garcia family formed a close association with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and its staff, and saw firsthand the impact that the Society can have on families.

“The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society helps families during what can be the one of the most difficult times they will face,” said Garcia. “I’m proud to be a part of this benefit, which will directly impact families right here in our community.”

The first four-some will tee off at 11:00 a.m. and an award ceremony and reception with silent auction will begin at approximately 3:00 p.m.  A variety of tournament prizes will be awarded for on-the-course performance including a BMW X5 or BMW 328 for a hole-in-one. The silent auction items include La Costa spa packages, Padres and Chargers tickets and memorabilia, a brand new 42” plasma television, a set of Callaway Irons, a membership to the Joseph Phelps Vineyard, and more - all donated by local businesses and organizations.

Funds generated through tournament entry fees and an accompanying silent auction will go directly to the Society.  The event was made possible by support and donations from Cricket, as well as the following sponsors: Samsung Mobile, QUALCOMM, Motorola, Clear Channel Radio, Element 79, NextG Networks, Kyocera Wireless, Brightpoint North America, Nokia, Qpay, UTStarcom, Avenger Engineering, Andrew Corp, and Staples Business Advantage, a Division of Staples.
