Cricket Holds Phone Drive to Collect Phones for Troops

WEST HARRISON, IN – September 14, 2007 – Cricket Communications, Inc., a leading provider of unlimited wireless services, is collaborating with Cell Phones for Soldiers in an effort to keep our deployed troops connected to loved ones at home by hosting a phone drive. Cricket has donated 150 phones to jump-start the collection.

On September 16th Cricket will collect new and used cell phones for soldiers in an all-day event at the Amvets Post #13 in West Harrison, located at 515 South State Street. Phones that are in good condition will be refurbished and sent to soldiers overseas. Phones that cannot be repaired will be recycled, and the money raised from the recycling program will be used to supply phone cards to soldiers.

“It is the least we can do to support troops,” said Kevin Jones, district director for Cricket. “These soldiers protect our country, and are often away from their families for months at a time. We hope these phones will keep our troops connected with their loved ones at home.”

Anyone not able to attend the event on September 16 can print a prepaid shipping label from the Cell Phones for Soldiers website, and send their donation directly to the organization. Cell Phones for Soldiers began in 2004 when thirteen-year-old Brittany Bergquist and her twelve-year-old-brother Robbie of Norwell, Massachusetts, heard a news report about an American soldier in Iraq who ran up a staggering phone bill by calling home.  They decided they wanted to do something to help, and started Cell Phones for Soldiers with their snack money.  They have since provided phones and calling cards to thousands of soldiers around the world. For information on Cell Phones for Soldiers, to make a monetary donation, or to read letters and stories from the soldiers and their families who have received phone cards, visit www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com.
