Briana Gil Remains Tucson’s Text Messaging Champ!

TUCSON, ARIZONA– August 9, 2007 – Cricket Communications, Inc, a leading provider of unlimited wireless services, is please to announce Briana Gil, 15, as the top text messager in Tucson after she scored the fastest time in Cricket’s CanUtxtFst 2007 text messaging contest.  Briana earned the title of the fastest text messenger in Tucson for the second year in a row with a time of 47.22 seconds beating her previous record of 54.75 seconds. She walked away with $500 and a Nokia 6275i with twelve months of Cricket® wireless service, including unlimited anytime minutes, unlimited long distance, and unlimited text and picture messaging.

Eight local contestants participated in the Tucson finals after qualifying during the CanUTxtFst 2007 preliminary rounds held for six weeks in July and August.  The participants were required to type the 160-character passage: "The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human," on their wireless phone with no errors or extra spaces.  Finalists were able to use their own wireless phone, but the "short text" and other timesaving features on the cell phone were disabled. Two Cricket judges were on hand to monitor the finalists with accurate stopwatches.

Briana Gil will have a chance to set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest text message to be scheduled at a later date. In order to set a new Guinness World Record, Briana will have to type the official passage faster than the current world record of 42.22 seconds, five seconds from her current city record. The Guinness World Record is currently held by Ben Cook, a Cricket customer from Provo, Utah.

“The CanUTxtFst 2007 city finals were fun and competitive. We had some amazing competitors turn out for the second year for this exciting annual event,” said Victor Gastelum, district director for Cricket in Tucson. “Text messaging has become one of the most popular ways to communicate and with fingers this fast, these texters can really take advantage of Cricket’s unlimited text messaging offer!”
