As part of Cricket Wireless and Muve Music’s inaugural Muve First Artist Challenge, seven hip hop and R&B artists will compete for your votes for six weeks until one artist is crowned the January 2013 Muve First Artist. To help you decide which artist to vote for, we’ve provided profiles on each of the artists so you can learn a little more about where their music is coming from.
Meet Skyzoo, one of our seven artists.
Like Biggie, Jay-Z and Mos Def before him, Skyzoo is a proud Bed-Stuy native who began rapping at the age of nine. Casual rap fans might remember him as another name on Jin’s hitlist from their freestyle battle on BET’s 106 & Park, but Skyzoo was just getting started.
In addition to having released over 10 mixtapes and two full LPs, Skyzoo has worked with everyone from Jay Dee and 9th Wonder to North Carolina’s Justus League. His music has been featured on HBO’s Entourage, NBA2K11 and NBA2K12, Grand Theft Auto 4 and more. Skyzoo’s vast array of influences run the gamut from classic hip rap (Notorious B.I.G.) to rappers turned movie stars (Kid ‘n Play) to jazz legends (John Coltrane).
His most recent album, A Dream Deferred, was released on October 2. It boasts an eye-catching album cover designed by Chilean artist Fabian Ciraolo. You can download A Dream Deferred featuring the track “Give It Up” on Muve Music today.
