As part of Cricket Wireless and Muve Music’s inaugural Muve First Artist Challenge, seven hip hop and R&B artists will compete for your votes for six weeks until one artist is crowned the January 2013 Muve First Artist. To help you decide which artist to vote for, we’ve provided profiles on each of the artists so you can learn a little more about where their music is coming from.
Meet Ryan Leslie, one of our seven artists.
During his freshman year at Harvard, Ryan Leslie devoted hours to creating and developing music in a basement studio on campus. He taught himself basic production skills and also developed a musical style all his own. In the summer of 2003, Ryan landed a production internship with famed producer Younglord, who has worked with everyone from R. Kelly and Diddy to Estelle. Within the first week, Leslie produced the song “Keep Giving Your Love To Me” that would later be performed by Beyoncé for the Bad Boys II soundtrack.
His internship with Younglord proved to be fruitful in more ways than one. A meeting with Diddy turned into a management contract, which turned into producing music for New Edition and Danity Kane, and meeting Tommy Mottola. Two solo albums later, Ryan is still making and producing music for some of today’s biggest artists.
On October 22, Ryan Leslie released his third studio album, Les Is More, influenced by Leslie’s collaborations with top rap artists such as Fabolous and Kanye West. Les Is More is the very first rap album from Ryan Leslie, and is the follow-up to the Grammy-nominated R&B album Transition released in late 2009. You can download “Beautiful Lie” on Muve Music today.
