First things first: is the cause of your bad reception your area, the building you’re in, your phone, or your carrier? In most cases, you will have purchased a phone that has optimal service in your area, so the carrier is rarely the issue. Once you identify the factors that are contributing to your bad signal, you can remedy the problem in most cases.
If your outdoor coverage is good, then your carrier is not to fault for the building’s interference, though many people automatically think it is carrier-related.. If your friends in the same building get good coverage with the different phones, then you may simply need a new device, like the awesome Blackberry Curve.. If everyone has issues in the building, then it is most likely a density/concrete issue that is blocking your signal.
One option for people in bad buildings is to install an external antenna. This is only feasible if the building in question is one that you frequent, like a workplace or your home. The only cost involved in this venture is not the antenna: you would also need an adapter kit for each phone in use within the building, so that the phones can access that antenna.
A great idea for individuals who are only concerned with their signal in a concrete building is a Repeater. These devices can be found online, and sometimes even in mall electronics stores. A patch applied to a nearby window, or a mini antenna for a phone, will usually give the cell phone user a focused signal, but not always. Check return policies before buying them, because they can be ineffective (due to many various and sundry reasons). Cheap gizmos claiming to be legitimate Repeaters are not effective, and will waste your money. Though they use similar technology, the cheaper devices have not yet reached a level of quality to make them a viable option.
For the best cell phone reception, reset your phone to the nearest tower each time you move, and try to choose carriers that serve your area broadly. Though it seems like common sense, many people choose carriers that simply do not serve their area, and then blame the carrier. Do your homework, and you won’t face that issue. The last option, and least attractive, is forwarding cell phone calls to the landline. It can save you money on minutes, even if it seems like a hassle.
