The Text Message Era

The era of the text message is in full swing. Texting is so popular that it is not unusual to hear people say they rarely talk on their cell phones, but that most conversations are done through text messages.

Advantages of Text Messaging

There are several situations where texting is a more convenient and effective way of communicating. Here are a few examples:

  • Getting a quick message to someone who may not be able to check voicemail, such as a text that reads, “Call me quick! Very important!”

  • Can be much faster than entering into a phone conversation. As fast as you can type the message and hit “send”, your message is delivered. You don’t have to scroll down your contact list, hit the button to dial the number, wait for the other person to find their cell phone, and then answer the call. Your texts and their replies are sent almost instantly.

  • Sometimes a loud conversation can be distracting to the people around you. Sending a text message is much more appropriate in this situation.

  • Having a private conversation in a public place can be tricky. If you absolutely can't wait, text messages can be an interim solution.

  • Text messaging can also provide peace of mind when time or circumstances won't allow for a telephone call. For example, you may be running late getting off work, but need to pick up your daughter. You can send a quick text to let her know you’re held up and will be there shortly.

While text messaging can take some getting used to if you're a first timer, once you get the hang of it, you'll quickly discover how convenient and reliable it is for today's hectic lifestyle. Just be sure you have a great text messaging plan from your cell phone provider, so your new found addiction doesn't drain your budget.
